I’ve had the privilege of teaching Lego-themed classes with my friend Jody for our local homeschool coop. Each class meets for an hour during the 6-week coop. We have a class for 1st-2nd graders and one for 3rd-5th grade. We’ve had a lot of fun learning with Legos over the last few weeks! Last week the kids worked on building their scenes based on one of 3 themes: Space, Shops, or Metro. The themes were based on a fantastic new-to-me product called BrickStix – each of the kids received a sheet of cling decals to use on their brick designs. This week we used the kids’ scenes combined with randomly assigned figures from Lego Education’s Fairy Tale and Historic Minifigures set and an iPad app from Lego to create Stop Motion Animation movies. The older kids’ were able to make their movies with very little adult assistance; the younger kids did a great job as well, but had an adult in charge of the iPads – probably more for my peace of mind than anything else. I’m really proud of their effort and results and wanted to showcase them here.
From our 1st and 2nd graders:
From our 3rd through 5th graders:
The kids really seemed to enjoy creating their movies and then watching those of their peers. I’m hoping this short exposure will whet their appetites to keep building and creating.
Have a great day!
